One of my all-time favourite authors has always been Georg Hermann, whose novels now are largely forgotten, after an attempt to issue a complete edition of his works had to be abandoned due to a lack of interest in the 1990s.
Hermann emigrated in the 1930s to the Netherlands before getting caught by the Nazis and being murdered in Auschwitz. His works were translated into English except for one novel, his most popular work “Jettchen Gebert”. I have one of the ultra rare copies of this translation, issued in the 1920s in the UK.
Highly interesting are his letters, written in the Dutch exile, where he summarised his views on the world, a sort of farewell as if he had known what was coming his way.
Despite never having been a political author Hermann points his finger in a prophetic way towards the eventually catastrophic developments he sensed. A timely reminder of our days, here is a short excerpt.
“Was für eine Welt verläßt man! Eine Welt, die wie Chronos ihre eigenen Kinder frißt, die die Heere ständig auf Kosten jeder Lebensverbesserung vergrößert, die Länder verwüstet, Städte in den Grund schießt, Fabriken in Trümmer legt, die ins Blaue und Sinnlose hinein produziert, ohne eine Ahnung zu haben, wie das Produzierte verteilt werden soll und wie der Mensch dann an die Güter kommen soll, nach denen er schreit in seiner Notdurft und in seinem Hunger — eine Welt, die allenthalben den Armen zusammenkartätscht, sowie er erträglichere Lebensbedingungen fordert, die einige wenige haben in überreichem Maße und als Grundlage ihrer Existenz ansehen. Eine Welt, in der sich die Regierungen gegen jede Verbesserung der Lebenslage und der Lebensführung ihrer Bürger sträuben, nur nicht gegen die Verbesserungen an Kanonen, Flugzeugen, Giftgasen, Unterseebooten und Fliegerstaffeln und anderer Instrumente der Lebens- und Kulturvernichtung. Eine Welt, in der die offizielle Lüge längst jede Wahrheit verdrängt hat und die alle Werte und alle Vernunft in das Gegenteil abwandelt, in der der Mensch für den Staat und nie der Staat für den Menschen da ist, nicht die Produktion für den Menschen, sondern der Mensch für die Produktion (…); die über Überbevölkerung jammert und Geburtenerhöhung fordert, nur um möglichst viel Schlachtvieh für die Zukunftskriege zu haben (…). Eine Welt, die sogar aus einem kürzlichen Mord an dreißig Millionen Männern aller Farben und Rassen das eine noch nicht gelernt hat, nachdem sie dadurch verarmt, verwüstet und zugrunde gerichtet wurde, daß Krieg ein ungangbarer Weg zur Verbesserung der Lebenslage des Menschen auf dieser Erde ist.”
(“What a world you leave! A world that eats its own children like Chronos, that constantly enlarges the armies at the cost of any improvement in life, devastates the countries, shoots cities into the ground, puts factories in ruins, which produces into the blue and senseless without having any idea, how the produced is to be distributed and how man should then get the goods he is crying for in his need and in his hunger – a world that everywhere aggravates the poor as well as he demands more bearable living conditions that a few have in to a large extent and as the basis of their existence. A world in which governments are opposed to any improvement in the living conditions and lifestyles of their citizens, but not against the improvements in cannons, airplanes, poison gases, submarines and air force squadrons and other instruments of life and culture destruction. A world in which the official lie has long since superseded all truth and which converts all values and all reason into the opposite, in which man is there for the state and never the state for man, not production for man, but man for production (…); who whines about overpopulation and demands an increase in birth, just to have as much slaughter cattle for the future wars (…). A world that, even from a recent murder of thirty million men of all colors and races, has not yet learned one thing after becoming impoverished, devastated, and ruined by the fact that war is an inevitable way to improve people’s lives on earth.”)
