The last interview with Friedrich Duerrenmatt: “Das Sinnlose als Freiheit”.
(The pointless as freedom.)
A fine companion to my current vacation time reading material (CormacMcCarthy: The Road/ Tarjei Vesaas: The Birds/Gerhard Roth:Die Imker/Heimito von Doderer: Die Strudlhofstiege)
McCarthy and Vesaas deal with desolation, Gerhard Roth with an apocalyptic setting and Doderer (often misunderstood by critical literary research-do these people actually read his books at all?), whose detailed excursions into the labyrinth of human existence and its accidental nature – the “Zufaelligkeit” – ties back to Duerrenmatt’s statement.
Amongst the absurdity of today’s ideologically driven, mostly
illiterate and ill-educated cultural wars this interview is refreshingly sober and full of insight.
